ABOUT
Phoebe Stannard was born in Rome and graduated with a BA in Fine Art (Painting) from Norwich School of Art in 2008, completing The Drawing Year at The Prince's Drawing School (now the Royal Drawing School) in 2010. Having been nominated as New Medalist of the Year 2009-10, Stannard spent time in Bulgaria at the National Academy of Art, and Rome in The School of the Mint. She works in a variety of media including drawing, prints and art medals, often taking inspiration from myths, decorative textiles and animals. In 2012, Stannard's work was exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Her medal, “Under Lock and Key II”, now forms part of the museum’s permanent collection. Her “Minotaur” medal has recently been editioned by the British Art Medal Society, with a copy now held in The British Museum. Phoebe’s work is hugely influenced by her childhood in Italy and by theater, circuses, puppet shows and Commedia dell’Arte. Often using narratives pulled from classical myths and art, her work is placed in a slightly surreal world, half her imagination, half observation of the world around her: she seeks the magic and comically grotesque that turns up unexpectedly in everyday life. Her fascination of pattern and textile, leads her interest in portraiture, telling a narrative through the clothes that her sitter wears, and so her enjoyment of dressing up and make belief is brought into her artistic practice. She currently lives and works in London, teaching for Drawing School Central, The New Fine Art Foundation Course and the Royal Drawing Clubs.
